In the past, open bariatric surgeries carried significant risks. These procedures often involved large incisions and were associated with complications such as:

• Incisional Hernias

• Wound Infections

• Bleeding

• Severe Malabsorption

• Marginal Ulcers

• Gastric Perforation

• Long-Term Nutritional Deficiencies

Advances in laparoscopic surgery improved outcomes. Procedures such as laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass reduced incision size and lowered some surgical risks.

This procedure creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine to reduce food intake and nutrient absorption. While highly effective for weight loss, long-term follow-up has revealed potential complications including:

• Internal Hernias

• Nutrient Deficiencies (Iron, B12, Calcium, Vitamin D)

• Ulcer Formation

• Hair Loss

• Need For Lifelong Supplementation And Monitoring

Another option, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, removes approximately 70–80% of the stomach and creates a narrow “sleeve.” Although this procedure involves fewer malabsorptive complications, it permanently alters stomach anatomy and is irreversible.

Importantly, surgical procedures alone do not address the behavioral and dietary patterns that contribute to weight gain. Without lifestyle changes, patients may still struggle with weight management over time.
